Supporting the more able at WGS
There are many opportunities at Whittington Green that students are able to benefit from with a full programme of events to raise the aspirations of all students and extend the skills of our most able.
Events with HEPP (Higher Education Progression Partnership)
- Y7 and Y8 students receive sessions about the benefits of higher education whilst Y8 also attend a Y8 careers day at the University of Sheffield.
- Y9 attend an evening event at the University of Sheffield accompanied by their parents or carers.
- Y10 are able to visit Hallam University and have a look at University accommodation.
- Y11 have a revision skills session to support them in preparing for their GCSEs.
Discover Us Programme (run by The University of Sheffield) involves students in Y9, 10 and 11. There are 2 day events per year which students attend at the University which helps them to develop study skills and gives them a chance to experience University life. In Y10 there is also an opportunity to attend an overnight experience staying in university accommodation.
The Brilliant Club run a Scholars programme which allows some of our most able students in Y9 to follow a course taught by a current PhD tutor from a local research university. Students study a subject, which is not part of the normal secondary school curriculum and complete an assignment which is marked using degree classifications. They visit 2 Russell Group Universities and attend a graduation ceremony to celebrate their achievements.
Mentoring the progress of our more able students is very important at Whittington Green. We review and analyse this progress at each data point during the year so that students can be encouraged, congratulated and supported where necessary. By mentoring our more able students, we can help to break down any barriers to learning and students can receive the correct guidance to achieve their full potential.
More Able Evening. Y9, Y10 and Y11 students are invited every year, during the autumn term, to attend our More Able evening. During this evening, there is advice on how to achieve levels 7-9 in Maths, English and Science plus input from HEPP about going to University and advice on student loans. We would love to welcome you to this event to answer any questions that you may have about how to support more able students at Whittington Green.
