In year 7 you will study Geography as part of a rotation with Religious Studies and History.
Aims of Key Stage 3 Geography
Pupils should consolidate and extend their knowledge of the world’s major countries and their physical and human features. They should understand how geographical processes interact to create distinctive human and physical landscapes that change over time. In doing so, they should become aware of increasingly complex geographical systems in the world around them. They should develop greater competence in using geographical knowledge, approaches and concepts [such as models and theories] and geographical skills in analysing and interpreting different data sources. In this way pupils will continue to enrich their locational knowledge and spatial and environmental understanding.

Aims of the Subject
- To focus on the geographical processes that shape our world through the study of human and physical geography.
- To encourage students to relate to and learn from the world around them.
- To appreciate the threats to the planet and evaluate suitable solutions.
- To develop a variety of skills including – map work, fieldwork, ICT, numeracy and literacy.
- To use a wide range of teaching and learning activities.
- To build on the Geography covered in KS3 and provide a stepping stone to further study and career opportunities.
The Geography course is divided into human and physical units:
- Natural hazards including earthquakes, volcanoes, storms and climate change
- Ecosystems focusing on tropical rain forests and cold environments
- UK physical landscapes including rivers and glaciation
- Urban issues and challenges
- Changing economic world
- Resource management focusing on energy
As international links become closer, easier and faster, we need more than ever to understand the geography of the world. These topics will enable you to answer questions such as:
- Why do people live in areas at risk of tectonic hazards?
- What are the impacts of deforestation on biodiversity?
- How have glaciers shaped the mountainous areas of the UK?
- Are megacities good or bad?
- How important is fairtrade in reducing the development gap?
- What are the impacts of the UK’s declining energy resources?
