Whittington Green School Governor Impact Statement
In conjunction with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team, we have created our vision and ethos for the school and embedded this in our daily routines.
In line with legislation, we have reorganised our own membership and we are taking the opportunity to audit the skills of governors which will identify any gaps in knowledge and skills on the board. Governors have already received some training and are meeting the requirements of the Equality Act. We have agreed a robust programme of in-house training for the academic year to strengthen our knowledge of governance and relevant legislation that we need in order to carry out our functions effectively.
In March 2018 we increased the size of the governing board to strengthen our skills base and we now include members with a range of financial, business and educational experience.
We have reorganised our meetings structure to eliminate all committees except the Pay Committee and to increase the number of full Governors meetings. This ensures that all Governors are fully aware of the work of the board. The agreed Governors for Appraisal continue to receive support from an external advisor in respect of setting and reviewing the targets for the Headteacher.
Governors work cooperatively with the headteacher and leadership team to develop the school’s development plan which we then monitor regularly, vigorously challenging the Head and her team with regard to progress towards the agreed key performance indicators.
The school has managed to set a rapidly decreasing budget without a deficit. We have demanded detailed and regular financial reports which have allowed the governors to establish much clearer financial accountability.
We have viewed detailed analysis by staff of the last year's exam results and put into place plans for improving those areas most in need of better outcomes. Governor’s robust questioning and analysis of data trends ensure action plans are focussed on key areas.
We have used well qualified outside experts to help departments which have not been improving rapidly especially help with moderation of marking. We have also supported non specialist teachers in the development of the curriculum. Some contacts have been through our local community and others through our wider networking.
Governors have established a clear role in supporting departments and holding them to account, through a termly programme of monitoring visits and involvement in the school’s quality assurance process. These visits allow governors to work closely with staff members, track departmental progress and seek student feedback on school performance. Regular visits also monitor specific aspects of the school development plan. All visits are recorded and fed back at Governors meetings.
All Governors are fully committed to the school and its vision for its pupils.
Governors will continue to challenge and support appropriately, including acknowledging areas where real impact is seen.
