Careers guidance at Whittington Green School

We believe every child should leave Whittington Green School prepared for life in modern Britain. This means ensuring secure academic progress and developing in every young person the values, skills and behaviours they need to get on in life. All our students receive a rich provision of classroom and extra-curricular activities that develop a range of character attributes, such as resilience and grit, which underpin success in education and employment. Our high quality, independent careers guidance is also crucial in helping pupils emerge from school more fully rounded and ready for the world of work.

Providing a quality careers service will ensure that young people can select educational routes that are suitable for them. This will help young people to develop skills employers want to match the needs of our economy. We will secure independent careers guidance for all year 7-11 pupils, which is intended to inspire and motivate them to fulfil their potential.

The school will help every pupil develop high aspirations looking at a range of careers, inspiring every pupil through more real-life contacts with further/higher education and the world of work, which can help them understand where different choices can take them in the future.

Our strategy is to:

  • Provide access to a range of activities that inspire young people, including employer talks, careers fairs, motivational speakers, colleges and university visits.
  • Build strong links with employers who can help to boost young people’s attitudes and employability skills, inform pupils about the range of roles and opportunities available and help them understand how to make this a reality.
  • Offer high quality work experience that properly reflects individuals’ studies and strengths, and supports the academic curriculum.
  • Widen access to advice on options available post-16, for example, apprenticeships and vocational routes alongside the more traditional A levels and university route.
  • Provide face-to-face advice and guidance to build confidence and motivation.
  • Work with local authorities to identify vulnerable young people, including those with special educational needs and those at risk of not participating post-16, and the services that are available to support them.
  • Provide information to students about the financial support that may be available to help them stay in education post-16.
